I think it all just depends on the person. c: For instance, I have a friend who absolutely loathes hard shading, but I actually like it a lot more than soft shading, and I rather dislike very, very soft shading. c:
I think that people like both pixeled pets and non-pixels, but with non-pixels you have more room to work with designs and such. However, this also works well with pixels, because of their small size, the designs will be quicker to make but sometimes harder to get something to look right. Overall, I just think it's user preference. c:
