Well, the thing is that the amount of time it takes to create a website can be a very large timeframe. Art, layout, custom coding, design... it takes a lot. You don't need to worry about "making something for everyone", because it is your site and you should do what you're interested in. You'll get a more dedicated memberbase if you get people who are interested in a certain type of pet - like sugar gliders or something - then if you did everything and the kitchen sink. ;3 If this is your first one, it is best to start small and really figure out the script and how it works and build second or third sites later.
But that's just my suggestion - I've been working with this script for ages, but I only have one site with one type of pets - but it isn't even out of beta and I have 15+ members already without advertising. It's all about being dedicated to what you're doing, not supply and demand.
