There's nothing wrong with using a properly salted MD5 hash for passwords. A different, randomly generated salt for each password makes it totally infeasible to generate the sort of rainbow hash...

There's another solution to this problem that doesn't require Apache (for the .htaccess file to work). All that the forum parser cares about is that the URL ends in something that looks like an image...
